Common Types Of Bitumen Roofing

The use of SBS increases flexibility within the roofing membrane and allows for stronger expansion and contraction abilities.

APP increases the lifespan of the roofing system that is applied to. Typically, we see more clients choose SBS based on the increased flexibility from the synthetic rubber.

For standard SBS bitumen roofing, a two-ply system is used with rolls that overlap the edge of each previous roll.

With other membrane based flat roofing systems, seams may be left open, or end up being covered with a different type of material that has a shorter lifespan, making the risk for roof leaks much more significant.

Durability

The high tensile strength of bitumen makes it extremely durable, and prevents the development of cracks that we usually see in other membrane based flat roofs. Additionally, bitumen is also rated high for protection against wind, fire and hail. This is extremely valuable, especially here in Oklahoma with the types of sever weather that we regularly experience.

Disadvantages of Bitumen Roofing

Color Options Are Limited

When we say limited, we really mean, extremely limited, exclusively to the color black. Black roofing is considered a disadvantage because it absorbs heat, affecting your utilities and AC system for your building.  With our triple digit Summers in Oklahoma, it’s always a good idea to ensure you have a strong AC system that can handle those hot Summer days, especially with bitumen roofing.

The 1 Ply Option

Bitumen does have the option of a consistency of 1, 2 or 3 ply. We do not recommend using the 1 ply option, as it does not hold up to the test of time very well and has been known to break down at a very fast rate. Even though the 2 and 3 ply options are more costly, they will last a much longer time than a 1 ply bitumen roof.

Granules

We recommend that granules be put in with your bitumen roof for protection from sun exposure, and to limit the interior temperature being affected by the roofing material. In some cases, you may have to purchase granules in addition to your bitumen roofing.
